Hilo-born Vernon Miyamoto was a yearbook student
photographer at McKinley High School when he graduated in 1956. He received the AB and Ph.D. degrees at the Johns Hopkins
University in Baltimore.
Subsequent
activities include laboratory research and teaching of medical school students at the University of California Medical Center,
San Francisco, and the University of Texas Health Science Center, Dallas. Vernon returned to Hawaii to work for the Navy Public
Works Center in Pearl Harbor and the State Department of Health. He retired in 2004 after serving as director of the State
Laboratories Division for eighteen years.
Vernon's main artistic interest has always been black & white photography.
Since high school he has developed, printed and enlarged numerous negatives - activities which have been invaluable toward
his entry into digital photography. He tries to portray common subject matter in uncommon ways. He is always searching for
appealing picture-taking possibilities. Vernon was 2007, 2009 "Artists of Hawaii" selected by Honolulu Academy of
Arts jurors. Artists of Hawaii 2009: Vernon Miyamoto "Faces"
